What Really Happens to Your Food Scraps
If you’ve ever wondered where your food scraps go after our truck pulls away from your curb, here’s a secret: they don’t get handed off to a middleman, shipped off to a foreign country, or dried out or burned up in an industrial kiln.
GoZERO is deeply rooted right here across Ohio and Indiana. As a family-owned operation with two fully licensed composting facilities, we process every single pound ourselves. We care about regional soil, local food systems, and healthy communities—which means doing things the right, meticulous way.
Here is a behind-the-scenes look at how your leftovers become that beautiful black soil amendment that feeds local soil.
Step 1: It Starts at the Curb
Real composting begins long before material ever reaches our yard. It starts with heavy collaboration between our team and yours.
Hand Inspections: Every time our drivers service your cart, they personally inspect the contents for non-compostables.
Rapid Feedback: If an issue pops up, we document it and communicate back to you same-day or next-day so we can solve it together.
Clean Carts: Drivers track metrics like gallons and pounds, and wash your containers right there on site to keep pests away, keep your site clean, and cut down on trucking miles..
Step 2: The Double-Check & The Wood Chip Blanket
When the truck returns to our compost yard, we don't just dump the load into a giant, hidden mountain. We lay the material out in a long, flat line so our team can hand-pick through it a second time.
Once verified clean, we push the material up and cover it with a generous blanket of wood chips. This keeps odors down and traps moisture while the organic matter waits to enter the official pile. (Fun fact: biological breakdown actually begins as soon as a scrap hits your bucket!)
Step 3: The Recipe (100% Biological Heat)
Once or twice a week, our loader operators mix "greens" (nitrogen-rich food scraps) with "browns" (carbon-rich wood and yard fibers) to create the ideal habitat for millions of hungry microbes and beneficial fungi.
We rebuild these mixtures into long rows called windrows. Within days, microbial activity explodes. Without adding a single watt of external energy, the natural activity of these organisms drives pile temperatures up to 130°F–160°F, naturally eliminating weed seeds and pathogens.
Step 4: The Progressive Windrow Shuffle
Every couple of weeks, each pile gets mixed, aerated, and moved one position forward in our compost yard.
This progressive system keeps raw, fresh arrivals completely separate from maturing batches, while continuous turning ensures items like cardboard and certified compostable serviceware break down rapidly.
Step 5: Lab Testing & The "Sourdough" Screen
After five or more turns, the rich, dark material undergoes strict quality assurance:
Lab Testing: Samples are sent to an independent laboratory to verify the batch is free of pathogens and heavy metals while measuring its rich nutrient profile.
Sieving: Approved material goes through a giant mechanical screener that allows only particles 1/2-inch or smaller to pass through.
The Microbe Starter: Any oversized chunks that don't pass but just need a little more time to break down more fully, like bits of wood scrap, get recycled back to the start of the process. Packed with active fungi and bacteria, these pieces act like a living sourdough starter, instantly seeding raw food scraps with microbial life.
Step 6: Barn-Aged for Easy Use
While most commercial operations leave finished compost out in open dirt fields to get soggy as it cures, we work to store our finished product inside dry, covered barns. Protecting it from excess rainwater keeps the compost lightweight, easy to spread, and packed with full-strength fertile value.
Real Soil Built by Real Neighbors
Composting isn't just a collection service—it’s an ecosystem we tend daily across Ohio and Indiana. From our curb check to the final lab test, every step is designed to restore the soil that sustains us.
